National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) are obtained through a combination of on-site practical assessment and college-based work. You are most likely to achieve these through being employed and issued day or block release to college. There are no formal exams involved in NVQ/SVQ attainment - overall competence is assessed. You can complete an NVQ/SVQ as a full-time or a part-time 'sandwich' course.

In England most colleges will require 4 GCSE passes before enrolment.

In Scotland no formal qualifications are required.
