Construction Apprenticeship Advice for Northern Ireland

If you have decided that a construction apprenticeship is for you here’s a brief outline of what’s available.

ApprenticeshipsNI and Training for Success are government funded partnerships with training providers across Northern Ireland to deliver your training e.g. your local College or Training Provider.

Training Stages

Stage 1 – Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Start training with an approved Training Provider (21 hours per week approx).

During this 12 week period, you’ll learn about important things like Health and Safety and will start to build your skills.

After 12 weeks, your training will depend on whether you have found work with a construction company.

Stage 2 – Apprenticeship Training

It is recommended that you follow an apprenticeship under ApprenticeshipsNI. This is only possible if you’re employed and we know that this can sometimes be a difficult thing to organise.

Employed Route

If you have secured employment, your week will be split between time with the employer and time in-centre training. The recommended rate of pay for those following this route is £141 per week.

When on day release from work (normally two days per week), you’ll be improving your essential skills and working towards achievement of your NVQ Level 2 and full qualification.

In-Centre Route

If you have not found employment after week 12, you can continue working towards achievement of your technical certificate with your training provider (you will receive a weekly training allowance). You may also get some work experience during this time

Stage 3 – Becoming fully qualified

All apprentices must be employed to be eligible for stage 3 – This will normally be up to a year and a half after the start of your training.

Most of your week will be spent working with your employer. There will also be periods of off the job training (normally one day per week) so that you can work towards achievement of your qualification (NVQ Level 3 plus all other construction framework requirements).
