What do you like about your apprenticeship?

It's given me the chance to develop my skills on site whilst being able to learn at the same time.

Why did you choose this career?

I chose to do Bricklaying because I had originally chosen to do Construction Management at university but I thought I needed a trade behind me. So I enrolled onto a bricklaying course at Bedford College where I was chosen for an apprenticeship by general construction firm, Relmfield Builders.

What do you do day-to-day?

I do anything that's required for a bricklayer; from drainage to cavity walling, solid walling, screeding, concreting, plastering, general maintenance work and brickwork.

What are the good bits about your job?

I like everything, from the team I work with to the practical skills I've learnt. My confidence has grown as a result of developing new skills in the day-to-day different situations we're put into and the fact that I'm learning every day. I also like the fact that being an apprentice allows you to learn whilst earning a wage which is really good!

What's the coolest thing you've done so far?

One of the best things I've done was the building of an inspection chamber at Gilbert Inglefield Middle School in Leighton Buzzard, as that was one of the first tasks I did on my own. I also enjoyed the reconstruction of a stone pillar at a local church and recently just finished building an extension, which was fun.

What would you say to anyone who wanted to try this?

I would say just do it. It's the best decision I ever made as it's opened so many doors.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years I'd like to have a more managerial role or a surveying role but I would still love the opportunity to be able to go out on site and be able to use the tools and skills that I've learnt as an apprentice because it's what I love doing.
