Which company do you work for?
I work for the Willmott Dixon Group who work in partnership with
Birmingham City Council on the north side and south side of the
city. We do all aspects of renewals and repairs to bathrooms
and kitchens along with plastering, electrics and gas fittings.
What are the good bits about your job?
Every day I enjoy absolutely everything, everything I'm
learning, everything I get involved in, it's just great to actually
be doing it. The skills I've gained from being at college have
given me the confidence to be able to go out into work and do the
jobs that I do from day to day.
Why did you choose this career?
The reason I chose to do this apprenticeship was that I've loved
manual work ever since I was little; you know, tinkering about with
things when I was younger.
What do you do day-to-day?
On a daily basis I do a lot of general maintenance - anything
from tiling to plumbing, to carpentry, hanging doors, plumbing in
radiators, baths, toilets, plastering and small bits of
patchwork.
What would you say to anyone who wanted to try
this?
I'd say definitely go for it, I mean if they're going to do
Building Maintenance Operations, like I'm doing, it's a great way
to get into construction because a lot of employers are looking for
multi-skilled people.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I do see myself running my own business at some point during the
future. It's a big dream of mine to design and build houses.
