What's involved

Team leaders play an important role in helping the business run smoothly. They organise and encourage the team and its workload and make sure performance is kept to a really high standard.

Work experience is typically the main route to becoming a team leader. They have had to gain good work experience and prove that they can handle things responsibility.

Some of the tasks that a team leader does include:

• assisting managers and perform assigned duties
• delegating tasks
• ensureing work is completed in a safe, economical and efficient manner
• preparing reports
• providing guidance and planning training
• ordering supplies
• checking on the quality, progress and outcome of jobs
• reviewing work and evaluating performance
• coordinating and attending team meetings

Team leaders may be involved in building a variety of projects including homes, hospitals, schools, prisons, sports centres, bridges, power stations and water treatment works.

Skills required

You'll need to be able to make decisions and not be afraid to share new ideas and deliver what has been promised.

Showing initiative and focus is important and you'll need to be able to work unsupervised to achieve and maintain the interest to see the job through. You'll need to plan and prioritise your own work, and other people's, and be accurate with record keeping so you can develop a system that's manageable.

Having good spoken and written communication skills is important. You'll also need to be involved and proactive in getting to know your team to show that you're interested in what they have to say.

Being able to cope, stay calm under pressure and avoid getting angry and upset is crucial. Motivation and celebrating successes are key to this role as well as being able to use computer and IT equipment proficiently.

Qualifications required

There are no formal requirements although it would help to have GCSE's in English/Welsh and Maths at A*-C.

Applications from students with the Foundation/Intermediate Welsh Baccalaureate are also welcomed.

Progression routes

An Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) for Construction Team Leader is currently under development.

There are opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas.
