What's involved

There are hundreds of different types of flooring; from linoleum, carpets and wood, to plastic or slate tiles.

As a floorlayer, you would be responsible for finding the right material for the job and then preparing the background surface, cutting the material to fit exactly and laying it in place.

Skills required

This is an indoor-only role which can also include working late into the night to get the job done. The job is physically demanding, so you need to be able to spend much of your time kneeling down as well as lifting and carrying heavy flooring materials.

You'll also need a head for figures to ensure that you not only cut flooring to the right size but also in the most economical way.

Qualifications required

There are no formal requirements although it would help to have Maths and English Standard Grades.

£16,000 - £22,000

Progression routes

If you decide to progress into supervisory, design or management roles there are opportunities to study for:

• Technical, supervisory and  management SVQ qualifications (SCQF Levels 6 to11)
• HNC Construction or a number of other built environment HNC/HND qualifications (SCQF Levels 7 or 8)
• Degree level qualifications in a number of construction disciplines (SCQF Levels 9 to 12)
