Formworker
Formworkers cut and bend wood and metal on construction sites, before turning the materials into structures. They are also used whenever anything is built out of concrete, including bridges, foundations beams and staircases.

What's involved
Formworkers make temporary structures out of wood or metal which
act as a mould. These moulds then have wet concrete poured into
them and, when the concrete has hardened, the structures are
removed to reveal perfectly shaped pieces.
Skills required
You'll need to enjoy being part of a team to be a formworker and
good communications skills will be important. You'll have to work
to precise measurements with wood and metal so a good head for
figures is also important.
Qualifications required
There are no formal requirements although it would help to have
Maths and English Standard Grades.

Progression routes
If you decide to progress into supervisory, design or management
roles there are opportunities to study for:
- Technical, supervisory and management SVQ qualifications
(SCQF Levels 6 to11)
- HNC Construction or a number of other built environment HNC/HND
qualifications (SCQF Levels 7 or 8)
- Degree level qualifications in a number of construction
disciplines (SCQF Levels 9 to 12)
