What's involved

Plasterers mix and apply plaster onto internal walls and ceilings to create a surface that is ready for decorating.

Most people know about that part of a plasterer's work, which is called solid plastering, but that is by no means all that they do.  

There is also fibrous plastering, which involves making ornamental plasterwork in a workshop or on site. This is the kind of thing you see on the ceilings of decorative buildings.

A plasterer is an expert at using the specialist tools of their trade and has a good knowledge of how to work safely.

Skills required

You'll need good practical and creative skills, especially for fibrous plastering and other decorative work. You also have to be able to work quickly, accurately and as part of a team.

Qualifications required

There are no formal requirements although it would help to have GCSE's in English or Welsh and Maths at A*-C (Applications from students with the Foundation or Intermediate Welsh Baccalaureate are also welcomed).

Salary ranges

£21,000 - £29,500

Progression routes

There are a wide range of opportunities for plasterer apprentices to have a structured career path in both new builds and refurbishments.

This apprenticeship will enable progression to:

  • Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Plastering

After gaining work experience area there are opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas.
