What's involved?
Single ply waterproofing is specified by architects on new
buildings as it allows them to make unusual shapes on the roof that
suits the single ply materials.
The materials are very lightweight and easy to use, but single
ply roofers are very skillful and considered to be skilled
craftspeople in this area of roofing work. They use a wide range of
materials and know how and where to apply them. The specialised
nature of the work means good operatives are also in high
demand.
They are used on very prestigious projects and highly skilled
and qualified operatives can look forward to making good money,
either working with companies or setting up their own business.
Skills required
As with all roofing jobs, being confident at heights is
essential. You'll also need to be technically minded and be
comfortable reading plans, diagrams and instructions, so a good
background in maths is important.
A good level of fitness is required and good practical skills
for using tools and equipment. You'll be working out in all
weathers and you will need to follow strict safe working
practices.
Qualifications required
There are no formal requirements although it would be
advantageous to have Maths and English Standard Grades.
