Construction is a fast-moving industry. We'll keep you informed of all the latest from the world of construction.

Mission Africa on the BBC

The programme, airing on 3rd Jan, BBC1, 830pm, follows a group of young construction workers who gave up six weeks of their lives to help develop a game reserve in Kenya.

The stars of the show, 15 building apprentices aged from 17–32, were selected from hundreds of applicants across the UK. They travel to the middle of a desert in northern Kenya with the presenter, Nick Knowles, who managed to dislocate his shoulder whilst filming when he fell off a Land Rover. Nick explained: "I fell off the top of a truck. I knocked myself out and dislocated my shoulder. I've basically separated my collar bone from my shoulder. Luckily I fell on my head, so that didn't do me any permanent damage!"

Despite the physical demands of the challenge, the programme sees the volunteers using their trade to help build a small tourist lodge, refurbish the water supplies in the area and to move some badly needed wildlife from Lewa to Sera. In addition the presenters Nick and ex-SAS Major Ken Hames help them to fit into bush life and learn a little more of the local cultures and lifestyles. Ken in particular helps them to develop a sympathy and understanding for the ecosystem and wildlife.

The series follows the group – their ups, downs and challenges – some of them very real and demanding in the semi arid conditions into which they launch themselves, trying to put everything in place so that tourism can start.

Tonight, the team tackles a dangerous 100 km journey through bandit territory and thick acacia bush. They meet the local Samburu tribe they are to work with, set camp under the stars and are greeted by a curious five ton visitor. And it dawns on them how critical their water shortage is.

Two of the volunteers are ConstructionSkills apprentices, Shera Singh from Bradford apprentice Joiner and Sarah Poole from South Devon apprentice Painter and Decorator, so follow their story and let it be an inspiration to you.
