Why did you choose this career?
I’ve had an interest in construction from an early age. Some family members work in the industry and I wanted a career where I could use maths, that’s what I enjoyed best at school.
What do you do day-to-day?
My job is a financial one, I deal with the sub-contractors who are appointed to carry out work at the wind farm, checking invoices to authorise payment. On a daily basis this can be anything from £2,000 to £60,000, it’s a lot of responsibility but that’s what gives you the buzz!
What advice would you give prospective students?
Work experience is so valuable, that’s what I did. I spent a week with a construction company and it confirmed that I had made the right choice. The part-time study option suits me. I get to earn some cash, go to college one day per week and it all seems to make sense putting the two together, it works for me! My company really support me and pay for my college books. I’ll also get the chance to continue to degree level if I want to.
Good bits about your job?
I can’t believe my first job after leaving school is on this windfarm, it’s awesome. My friends just can’t grasp how big the site is. We’re constructing 140 wind turbines and even when you’ve seen them 100 times, they’re still impressive. It makes me feel very proud. I love the variety of work and although
I work mainly in the office I get the chance to go out in the 4x4 jeeps to see what it’s all about. That
really helps with my understanding of the project and where everyone in the team fits in. I am always
learning new skills and surprised by the amount of variations and methods of working. It’s a dynamic environment to work in... always changing.
