Jubilee Library, Brighton
Brighton's Jubilee Library was opened on World Book Day 2005. Keen to shake off any stereotypes associated with the usual stuffy libraries you come across, it cuts a very impressive construction - ultra modern, innovative and one of the most energy efficient public buildings in the country.
Fast Facts
- While the library is maintaining a modern look, the décor has a very funky 70's feel to it: think beechwood walls, lime green chairs and turquoise information desks, Austin Powers would love it - well, this is Brighton!
- This is not just a run-of-the mill library - how many others do you know that have a Playstation! (as well as a well stocked collection of CD's and DVD's!) Making the building eco-friendly was a very important element in the design process.
- The sun's energy is gathered through the vast glass south wall and heat is stored in the walls and floor, and released slowly into the surrounding space. Even the loos are flushed with recovered rainwater!
- Being inside the building feels just as airy and spacious as being outside. Inspiration for the 'cathedral-like' interior was drawn from the 19th century Paris libraries of Henri Labrouste.
