An estimator, or cost engineer as they are also known, works out how much it costs to supply products or services to a client.
The estimator works out the approximate total cost of the
building work from the contract drawings and the bill of
quantities. They find out information about the cost of the
materials and calculate the time it will take to do the work.
You'll need to be excellent at Maths, IT and communicating to do
this role. You'll also have to be good at paying attention to
detail as well as being good at solving problems.
An organised approach to your work is very important as you'll
have to meet strict deadlines and you'll have to keep data
You'll need to have a BTEC, HNC/HNC or equivalent, or an
apprenticeship in Construction Contracting Operations.
