What's involved

Tilers specialise in preparing surfaces and covering floors and walls with tiles.

They work on a wide range of projects; from tiling household bathrooms or kitchens, to fitting tiles in commercial, industrial and leisure premises. Some specialise in more creative or heritage restoration projects.

Skills required

The job is varied so you need to be flexible, adaptable and happy to travel. You also need to be good with figures to ensure you calculate the right amount of tiles for the work and follow design plans correctly.

Qualifications required

There are no formal requirements although it would help to have Standard Grades in English and Maths.

Salary ranges

£17,000 - £25,000

Progression routes

Wall and Floor Tiling apprentices can be involved with new builds and refurbishments. If you decide to progress into supervisory, design or management roles there are opportunities to study for:

  • Technical, supervisory and  management SVQ qualifications (SCQF Levels 6 to11)
  • HNC Construction or a number of other built environment HNC/HND qualifications (SCQF Levels 7 or 8)
  • Degree level qualifications in a number of construction disciplines (SCQF Levels 9 to 12)
